In Mexico City on November 15, 2023, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the National Coordinator for the Defense of the Fourth Transformation, stressed the significance of Mexican workers’ well-being in bolstering both entrepreneurs’ success and the nation’s development. At the XV National Ordinary Congress of the Autonomous Confederation of Mexican Workers and Employees (CATEM), Sheinbaum Pardo announced the formalization of a coalition with the organization, aiming to engage various sectors in reshaping the country’s public life.
In her address, Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized Mexico’s favorable moment and the necessity of avoiding regression to past practices. Instead, she urged ongoing efforts to expand labor rights, stating, “Our fundamental goal is to avoid a return to a past marked by corruption and privilege; rather, we aim for the continued progress of Mexico’s public life under the Fourth Transformation.”
After swearing in the first Labor Committees for the Defense of the Fourth Transformation within CATEM, among the over 10,000 to be established, Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated the objective of ensuring workers’ access to dignified living standards. She highlighted collaboration with entrepreneurs, inspired by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s prioritization of “the welfare of all, with a focus on the less fortunate” for Mexico’s ongoing advancement.
“I pledge to defend the wages and labor benefits of Mexican workers… Our commitment is to progress together for the betterment of workers and our nation,” she concluded.
Pedro Haces Barba, senator of the Republic and general secretary of CATEM, briefly summarized achievements resulting from collaboration between the working class and the 4T government, including raising the minimum wage, expanding vacation days, and abolishing outsourcing. He stressed the necessity of aligning decisions with the principles of the 4T movement, championed by Claudia Sheinbaum, to continue serving Mexico’s workers.
“At this fifteenth ordinary congress, Doctor Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed our dedication to the Fourth Transformation’s principles during these pivotal moments,” he celebrated.
Senator Ricardo Monreal stressed the importance of a robust government-worker relationship to further expand labor rights, emphasizing that this can only be achieved under Sheinbaum Pardo’s leadership.
“Forging a pact and alliance with Doctor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is crucial at this juncture,” he emphasized.
The XV National Congress of CATEM saw the attendance of Governor Mara Lezama of Quintana Roo, Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila of Baja California, as well as Governors Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla of Michoacán, Sergio Salomón of Puebla, and Miguel Navarro of Nayarit.
