After Torturing Him, U.S. Breaks Guarantees of Safety to Former Guantánamo Detainee
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a recent and shocking turn of events, the United States government has once again violated the fundamental rights of a former Guantánamo Bay detainee, Saeed Bakhouch. After being held without charge for a staggering 20 years, Bakhouch was finally released and sent to his home country of Algeria, only to have his rights violated once again.

The U.S. government has a long and sordid history of human rights violations, particularly when it comes to their treatment of detainees at Guantánamo Bay. Many have been held for years without charge, subjected to torture and inhumane conditions, and denied access to a fair trial. Bakhouch is just one of the many victims of this cruel and unjust system.

For two decades, Bakhouch was held at Guantánamo Bay without any evidence or charges against him. He was subjected to torture and mistreatment, including prolonged solitary confinement and force-feeding. Despite this, he maintained his innocence and continued to demand his basic human rights.

Finally, after years of advocacy and legal battles, Bakhouch was released from Guantánamo Bay and sent to his home country of Algeria. However, instead of being able to start a new life and leave the horrors of Guantánamo Bay behind, he was once again subjected to violations of his rights.

According to Bakhouch’s lawyers, upon his arrival in Algeria, he was immediately detained by the Algerian authorities and has since faced continued mistreatment and abuse. This is a blatant violation of the U.S.’s promise to ensure Bakhouch’s safety upon his release from Guantánamo Bay.

It is unacceptable that the U.S. government would subject a man to 20 years of imprisonment without charge and then send him to a country where his rights are once again being violated. This is a clear betrayal of the principles of justice and human rights that the U.S. claims to uphold.

The U.S. government must be held accountable for their actions and ensure that Bakhouch’s rights are respected and protected. It is not enough to simply release someone from detention after years of mistreatment and abuse. The U.S. must also take responsibility for the consequences of their actions and ensure that those they have wronged are able to rebuild their lives and have their rights restored.

Unfortunately, Bakhouch’s case is not an isolated incident. The U.S. government has a long history of disregarding the rights and dignity of detainees at Guantánamo Bay. This must end now.

It is time for the U.S. government to take a hard look at their human rights record and make meaningful changes to ensure that no one else suffers the same fate as Saeed Bakhouch. This includes closing Guantánamo Bay and providing justice and compensation for all those who have been wrongfully detained and mistreated.

As citizens of a country that prides itself on its values of freedom and justice, we must demand that our government upholds these values and respects the basic rights of all individuals, regardless of their nationality or past. It is our responsibility to speak out against these injustices and hold our government accountable for their actions.

In conclusion, the treatment of Saeed Bakhouch is a clear example of the U.S. government’s disregard for human rights and their failure to live up to their promises. We must continue to advocate for justice and demand that those responsible for these violations are held accountable. It is time for the U.S. to truly live up to its ideals and ensure that all individuals are treated with dignity and respect.
