Can Anything Stop the Democratic National Convention From Being a Biden Coronation?

The upcoming Democratic National Convention (DNC) has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. With the ongoing pandemic, the convention has been forced to shift to a mostly virtual format, leaving many questioning the excitement and energy that usually surrounds this event. However, there is a deeper issue at play here – the lack of competition within the Democratic Party.

In a recent interview with The Intercept, one DNC member stated, “The Democratic Party is more invested in trying to maintain control than it is in trying to win an election in November.” These words ring true as we witness the lack of a strong challenger to Joe Biden for the party’s nomination. With Bernie Sanders suspending his campaign, Biden is now the presumptive nominee, and the DNC seems to be more invested in his coronation rather than a competitive election.

This lack of competition is not only damaging to the party but also to the American people. In a democracy, it is crucial to have a robust and healthy debate between candidates, allowing voters to make an informed decision. However, with the DNC seemingly pushing for a Biden coronation, the American public is being denied this opportunity.

There is no denying that Biden has a long and impressive political career, serving as a senator for over three decades and as the vice president under President Obama. However, his campaign has faced numerous challenges and criticisms, from his questionable record on issues such as criminal justice reform to his recent sexual assault allegations. With these issues, it is crucial for the party to have a strong and viable alternative to Biden, allowing for a fair and democratic nomination process.

But the question remains – why isn’t the DNC allowing for a competitive election? The answer lies in the party’s fear of losing control. With the 2016 election resulting in a shocking loss for the Democrats, they are determined to do everything in their power to avoid a repeat. This fear has led them to prioritize maintaining control over the nomination process rather than focusing on winning the election in November.

This fear is also evident in the DNC’s reluctance to adopt progressive policies and ideas that have been gaining momentum within the party. With the rise of progressive candidates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, the DNC seems to be holding on to more moderate and centrist ideologies, fearing that a shift to the left could alienate some voters.

But this approach is not only damaging to the party, but it is also damaging to the American people. The current political climate demands bold and progressive leadership, and by limiting competition and maintaining control, the DNC is depriving the country of this much-needed change.

Furthermore, this lack of competition within the party is also causing disillusionment among voters. Many progressive voters, who were once excited about the possibility of real change, are now feeling disheartened and disenfranchised by the lack of options. This could lead to lower voter turnout and ultimately hurt the party’s chances in the general election.

So, what can be done to stop the DNC from turning the convention into a Biden coronation? The answer lies in the hands of the party leaders. It is time for them to put aside their fears and prioritize the will of the people. The DNC must allow for a fair and open nomination process, where candidates are given a chance to make their case to the voters. This will not only strengthen the party but also give the American people the opportunity to choose the best candidate to lead the country.

In conclusion, the upcoming Democratic National Convention has the potential to be a defining moment for the party. It is time for the DNC to put the interests of the American people above their own fears and maintain control. A competitive and fair election is crucial for the success of the party and the country. Let us hope that the DNC will take heed of these words and allow for a truly democratic convention in November.
