Five prominent House Democrats have expressed their outrage over a recent investigation by The Intercept, which revealed that South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem had lied about her state’s involvement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Bernie Sanders, Delia Ramirez, Ilhan Omar, Pramila Jayapal, and Rashida Tlaib have all called for Noem’s resignation, citing her dishonesty and unethical behavior.
The investigation by The Intercept uncovered a series of emails between Noem’s office and ICE officials, which revealed that the governor had misled the public about South Dakota’s cooperation with the federal agency. In a statement to The Intercept, Noem’s office claimed that the state had not entered into any agreements with ICE, but the emails showed that South Dakota had in fact signed a memorandum of agreement with the agency.
This revelation has sparked outrage among many House Democrats, who have long been critical of the Trump administration’s immigration policies and ICE’s actions. Bernie Sanders, a vocal advocate for immigrant rights, condemned Noem’s lies and called for her immediate resignation. He stated, “Governor Noem’s attempt to deceive the public about her state’s involvement with ICE is unacceptable. We need leaders who are honest and transparent, not those who will lie to protect their political interests.”
Delia Ramirez, a member of the Illinois House of Representatives, also expressed her disappointment with Noem’s actions. She stated, “As a lawmaker, it is our responsibility to uphold the truth and act with integrity. Governor Noem’s lies not only undermine the trust of her constituents, but also perpetuate the harmful and unjust policies of ICE. She must be held accountable for her actions.”
Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American elected to Congress, echoed her colleagues’ sentiments and called for Noem’s resignation. She stated, “Governor Noem’s lies about her state’s involvement with ICE are a direct attack on immigrant communities. We cannot allow leaders who deceive the public to remain in positions of power. She must step down immediately.”
Pramila Jayapal, a strong advocate for immigrant rights and the co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, also joined in the call for Noem’s resignation. She stated, “Governor Noem’s lies are a betrayal to her constituents and to the American people. We need leaders who will stand up for the truth and fight against the harmful policies of ICE. She must resign from her position.”
Rashida Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress, also expressed her outrage over Noem’s actions. She stated, “Governor Noem’s lies are a direct attack on immigrant communities and a violation of her duty as a public servant. We cannot allow someone who willfully deceives the public to remain in a position of power. She must resign immediately.”
The House Democrats’ reactions to The Intercept’s investigation demonstrate their unwavering commitment to holding leaders accountable for their actions. They have made it clear that they will not tolerate dishonesty and unethical behavior from those in positions of power.
In light of these revelations, it is imperative that Governor Noem takes responsibility for her actions and resigns from her position. The American people deserve leaders who will act with integrity and honesty, not those who will deceive and mislead for their own gain. It is time for Governor Noem to step down and for the state of South Dakota to elect a leader who will prioritize the well-being and rights of all its residents, including immigrants.
