Israel ‘closer than ever’ to reoccupying Gaza: Far-right minister
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich made a bold statement on Tuesday, declaring that Israel is “closer than ever” to reoccupying the Gaza Strip and rebuilding settlements. This move, however, has been deemed illegal under international law and has sparked controversy and concern among many.

Smotrich, a member of the Yamina party, has long been known for his hardline stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In his recent statement, he expressed his belief that Israel has the right to reclaim the Gaza Strip and rebuild settlements in the area, which were dismantled in 2005 as part of the disengagement plan.

The Finance Minister’s words have caused a stir both within Israel and internationally. Many have condemned his remarks, stating that they go against the principles of peace and stability in the region. The United Nations has also expressed its concern, stating that any attempt to reoccupy the Gaza Strip would be a violation of international law and would only lead to further violence and suffering for both Israelis and Palestinians.

However, Smotrich remains undeterred, stating that Israel has the right to defend its citizens and reclaim its land. He believes that the current situation in Gaza, with Hamas in control and ongoing rocket attacks on Israeli civilians, is unsustainable and must be addressed.

It is important to note that Smotrich’s views do not represent the official stance of the Israeli government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not publicly commented on the Finance Minister’s statement, and it is unclear if he shares the same views.

Despite the controversy surrounding Smotrich’s statement, there are some who support his position. They argue that Israel has the right to defend itself and its citizens, and that the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by a terrorist organization, poses a threat to the security of the country.

However, the majority of Israelis and the international community believe that the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict lies in peaceful negotiations and a two-state solution. Reoccupying the Gaza Strip and rebuilding settlements would only further complicate and escalate the already tense situation.

Moreover, the idea of rebuilding settlements in the Gaza Strip is not only illegal but also impractical. The area is densely populated and lacks the necessary resources and infrastructure to support new settlements. It would also require a significant amount of funding, which could be better allocated towards improving the lives of both Israelis and Palestinians.

It is also worth noting that the Gaza Strip is under a strict blockade by Israel, which severely limits the movement of people and goods in and out of the area. Rebuilding settlements would only add to the already dire living conditions of the Palestinians living in Gaza.

In light of these facts, it is clear that Smotrich’s statement is not a viable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Instead, it only serves to further divide and polarize the two sides.

The international community must continue to push for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, one that respects the rights and aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians. It is only through dialogue and cooperation that a lasting solution can be achieved.

In conclusion, while Smotrich’s statement may have sparked controversy and concern, it is important to remember that it does not represent the views of the Israeli government or the majority of its citizens. Reoccupying the Gaza Strip and rebuilding settlements is not a viable solution to the conflict and would only lead to further violence and suffering. It is time for all parties involved to come together and work towards a peaceful resolution that benefits both Israelis and Palestinians.
