In an effort to promote peace and cooperation among the BRICS nations, India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, recently hosted the BRICS Foreign Ministers in New York. The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, focused on the need for peacebuilding and trade cooperation among the member countries.

The BRICS nations, comprising of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, are emerging as major players in the global arena. With a combined population of over 3 billion and a GDP of over $16 trillion, these countries have the potential to shape the future of the world. However, in order to do so, it is imperative that they work together towards common goals and objectives.

During the meeting, S Jaishankar emphasized the need for peacebuilding in the region and beyond. He stressed on the fact that peace is the foundation for development and prosperity, and without it, progress is not possible. He also highlighted India’s efforts in promoting peace and stability in the region, including its role in the peace process in Afghanistan.

The Foreign Ministers also discussed the need for greater trade cooperation among the BRICS nations. They recognized the potential for trade and investment within the bloc and the importance of tapping into it for mutual benefit. They also discussed ways to address trade barriers and enhance economic ties among the member countries.

India, which currently holds the chairmanship of BRICS, has been actively working towards strengthening the cooperation among the member nations. In his address, S Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to promoting the interests of all member countries and working towards a more inclusive and equitable world order.

As the world’s largest democracy and one of the fastest-growing economies, India’s role in BRICS is crucial. The country’s strong economic growth, coupled with its skilled workforce, makes it an attractive destination for investment and trade. India’s rising global stature and its strategic location also make it an important player in the BRICS bloc.

In addition to promoting peace and trade, the BRICS Foreign Ministers also discussed ways to enhance cultural and people-to-people ties among the member nations. They recognized the importance of cultural exchange in building strong relationships between countries and fostering a better understanding of each other’s cultures and traditions.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for the member countries to discuss global issues of mutual interest, including climate change, sustainable development, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Foreign Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to work together towards finding solutions to these challenges.

It is worth noting that India will be assuming the chairmanship of BRICS in 2026, which is a significant milestone for the country. This will be India’s second time holding the chairmanship, with the first being in 2012. It is a testament to India’s growing importance in the global arena and its commitment to promoting cooperation and peace among the BRICS nations.

In conclusion, the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, hosted by S Jaishankar, was a significant step towards promoting peace and cooperation among the member countries. It highlighted the importance of working together towards common goals and objectives for the betterment of the region and the world. With India at the helm in 2026, there is no doubt that the BRICS bloc will continue to play a crucial role in shaping the global landscape.
