Keep Talking About Gaza at Your Thanksgiving Table
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The holiday season is upon us, and for many, it is a time to gather with family and friends, share a meal, and give thanks. But this year, as we sit down at our Thanksgiving tables, there is a heavy cloud hanging over us. The recent ceasefire in Gaza may seem like a reason to put aside our differences and enjoy a peaceful holiday, but I urge you to keep talking about Gaza at your Thanksgiving table.

The truth is, the ceasefire is not a true resolution to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. It is merely a temporary pause in the violence, a band-aid on a deep wound that has been festering for far too long. And while it may provide a brief moment of relief, we cannot let it distract us from the larger issue at hand.

The people of Gaza have been living under a brutal blockade for over a decade, with limited access to food, water, and medical supplies. They have endured countless bombings, shootings, and other forms of violence at the hands of the Israeli military. And now, with the recent escalation of violence, they are once again facing unimaginable suffering.

It is easy to turn a blind eye to these atrocities, especially during the holiday season when we are surrounded by distractions and festivities. But as we gather with our loved ones, we must remember that there are families in Gaza who are unable to do the same. They are mourning the loss of their homes, their loved ones, and their sense of safety.

We cannot let the ceasefire lull us into a false sense of security. We must continue to talk about Gaza, to educate ourselves and others about the ongoing crisis. We must use our voices and our platforms to raise awareness and demand action from our leaders.

Some may argue that politics have no place at the Thanksgiving table, that it is a time for family and gratitude. But I believe that it is precisely during these moments of togetherness that we must have these difficult conversations. We must challenge ourselves and our loved ones to confront uncomfortable truths and to stand in solidarity with those who are suffering.

It may not be an easy conversation, but it is a necessary one. We cannot truly give thanks while turning a blind eye to the suffering of others. We must acknowledge our privilege and use it to uplift and support those who are oppressed.

This Thanksgiving, as we gather around the table, let us not forget the people of Gaza. Let us honor them by keeping their struggles at the forefront of our minds and using our voices to demand justice and peace for all. Let us continue to talk about Gaza, not just at our Thanksgiving table, but in our communities, our schools, and our places of worship.

In the end, it is not about taking sides or assigning blame. It is about recognizing the humanity in all of us and standing up for what is right. It is about acknowledging the pain and suffering of our fellow human beings and working towards a better future for all.

So, as you pass the turkey and share stories with your family, I urge you to also pass on the message of solidarity and compassion for the people of Gaza. Let us make this Thanksgiving a time of not just giving thanks, but also giving back and standing up for what is just and humane.
