This Isn’t the First Killing by ICE — and It Won’t Be the Last
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In the early hours of Friday morning, a woman was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis. The shocking incident has sparked outrage and reignited the debate over the agency’s tactics and impunity. But for many, this tragedy was not a surprise – it was a long time coming.

The victim, a 39-year-old woman from Guatemala, was being pursued by ICE agents for deportation. According to reports, she was pulled over by the agents and after a brief confrontation, one of them shot her in the stomach at point-blank range. She was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately, she did not survive. While the details of the incident are still emerging, one thing is clear – this is not the first killing by ICE, and sadly, it won’t be the last.

For years, ICE has been carrying out aggressive and often violent raids in communities across the country. These raids have resulted in the detention and deportation of thousands of undocumented immigrants, tearing families apart and causing immense trauma and fear. And yet, despite the growing criticism and calls for reform, the agency has continued to operate with impunity.

This latest incident is a tragic reminder of the consequences of ICE’s unchecked power. It is a result of a system that prioritizes enforcement over humanity and justice. It is a result of a system that has dehumanized immigrants and treated them as criminals, rather than human beings with rights and dignity.

But this is not just about one incident. It is about a pattern of violence and abuse that has been perpetuated by ICE for far too long. In 2018, a 20-year-old man from Honduras was shot and killed by ICE agents in Tennessee. In 2017, a 15-year-old girl from El Salvador was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Texas. And the list goes on.

Each of these cases is a tragedy, and each one should have been a wake-up call. But instead, ICE has continued to operate with impunity, shielded by the government and the media’s complicity in perpetuating the false narrative of immigrants as criminals and threats to national security.

It is time for us to face the reality that ICE’s tactics are not just harmful, but deadly. It is time for us to demand accountability and justice for the lives that have been lost at the hands of this agency. It is time for us to stand in solidarity with the immigrant community and fight for a more just and humane immigration system.

This incident also highlights the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform. We cannot continue to rely on a broken system that allows for such abuses to occur. We must demand a system that respects the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.

Moreover, it is essential to recognize that this incident is not just about ICE, but about the broader issue of systemic racism and violence against marginalized communities. We cannot ignore the fact that the victim in this case was a woman of color, and her death is a result of the intersection of multiple forms of oppression.

As we mourn the loss of yet another life at the hands of ICE, we must also take action. We must speak out against the agency’s violence and demand accountability. We must support and uplift the voices of the immigrant community, who are at the forefront of this fight. And we must continue to push for real and lasting change in our immigration system.

This isn’t the first killing by ICE, and unfortunately, it won’t be the last. But we have the power to change this narrative. We have the power to demand a more just and humane immigration system. And we must use that power to create a better future for all.
