“Trump Has Appointed Himself Judge, Jury, and Executioner”

The Caribbean and Pacific regions have always been known for their stunning beaches, picturesque landscapes, and vibrant cultures. However, recent events have brought a dark shadow over these idyllic settings. The Trump administration’s policies and actions have led to the death of innocent civilians in these regions, and their efforts to suppress coverage of these tragedies have sparked concern and outrage. It is clear that the current administration has appointed itself as the judge, jury, and executioner, disregarding the lives and rights of those living in these areas.

The Trump administration’s ruthless approach to immigration and border control has extended beyond the US-Mexico border. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of boats carrying migrants from the Caribbean and Pacific regions, seeking refuge and a better life in the United States. However, instead of offering a helping hand, the Trump administration has chosen to view these boats as a threat. As a result, the US Coast Guard has been authorized to use deadly force in intercepting these vessels, leading to the death of innocent civilians.

One such tragic incident occurred in October 2019, when a boat carrying 21 migrants from the Dominican Republic capsized off the coast of Puerto Rico. A video of the incident, showing coast guard officers repeatedly ramming the boat, surfaced on social media, sparking outrage and condemnation. Despite the evidence, the Trump administration continued to defend its actions, claiming that the boat was a threat to national security.

This is just one of the many instances where the Trump administration’s hard-line approach to immigration has resulted in the loss of innocent lives. In September 2020, a report by The Intercept detailed multiple cases of fatal boat strikes in the Caribbean and Pacific regions, all of which were authorized by the Trump administration. These incidents have not only led to the deaths of civilians but also to the displacement of many others who are now left without a home or a sense of security.

What is most concerning is the Trump administration’s attempts to suppress coverage of these tragedies. In the case of the October 2019 boat strike, the US Coast Guard attempted to remove the videographer’s drone from the area and confiscate the footage. However, the video was widely shared on social media, bringing the incident to the attention of the public and the media. The administration’s actions in trying to silence the video and prevent any press coverage reveal a dangerous disregard for transparency and accountability.

In a recent post on The Intercept, journalist Ryan Devereaux highlights the concerning trend of the Trump administration’s attempts to suppress coverage and evade accountability for their actions. Devereaux notes that “Trump has appointed himself judge, jury, and executioner” in these situations, allowing for the use of deadly force without proper oversight or accountability. This type of authoritarian approach erodes the principles of justice and human rights that our democracy is built upon.

The Trump administration’s actions in the Caribbean and Pacific regions are not isolated incidents. They are a reflection of the dangerous and reckless policies that have been implemented throughout his presidency. From the separation of families at the US-Mexico border to the travel ban on predominantly Muslim countries, the Trump administration has continuously shown a lack of empathy and concern for the lives of those seeking asylum and a better life in the United States.

It is clear that the Trump administration’s policies and actions in the Caribbean and Pacific regions have led to the death and displacement of innocent civilians. Their attempts to suppress coverage and evade accountability bring into question the foundations of our democracy. As global citizens, it is our responsibility to demand transparency and justice for those who have been affected by these injustices. We must not turn a blind eye to the actions of the current administration and must work towards a more humane and compassionate approach to immigration. Only then can we truly live up to the values of justice and equality that we strive for as a nation.
