New Bill Would Put Basic Limits on ICE Use of Force After Minneapolis Killing
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In the wake of George Floyd’s tragic death at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, the conversation surrounding police brutality and systemic racism in America has reached a boiling point. People from all walks of life are demanding change and accountability for those in positions of power who abuse their authority.

One area of law enforcement that has come under intense scrutiny is Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. Rep. Delia Ramirez, a Democrat from Illinois, has recently introduced a bill that aims to rein in ICE’s use of force and hold them accountable for their actions. The bill, titled “the bare minimum” by Rep. Ramirez, is a step in the right direction towards addressing the rampant abuse of power within the agency.

The bill, officially named the “ICE Use of Force Accountability Act”, would require ICE to report any use of force incidents to Congress on a quarterly basis. This transparency would not only hold the agency accountable for their actions, but also shed light on the extent of their use of force. The bill would also prohibit the use of deadly force by ICE agents unless it is absolutely necessary to protect themselves or others.

This bill is a direct response to the killing of George Floyd, as well as the numerous other cases of police brutality that have sparked nationwide protests. Rep. Ramirez recognizes that ICE is not exempt from this issue and that action must be taken to prevent similar tragedies from occurring within the agency.

However, despite the urgency and necessity of this bill, Democratic leadership has been resistant to the idea of abolishing ICE altogether. While some may argue that completely dismantling the agency is the only solution, Rep. Ramirez understands the reality of the situation and is focused on implementing tangible changes that can make a difference right now.

The bill has already gained support from several organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the National Immigrant Justice Center. These groups have long been advocating for accountability and reform within ICE and see this bill as a positive step towards achieving that goal.

The current state of ICE is a reflection of the larger issues within our criminal justice system. The agency has a long history of abuse and mistreatment towards immigrants, often targeting communities of color. This bill not only addresses the immediate need for accountability within ICE, but also highlights the need for systemic change in how we approach law enforcement in America.

It is important to note that this bill is not a complete solution to the problems within ICE. It is a starting point, a foundation upon which we can build towards a more just and equitable system. It is also a reminder that change is possible when we have leaders like Rep. Ramirez who are willing to take action and fight for what is right.

In the face of adversity and resistance, Rep. Ramirez remains steadfast in her pursuit of justice and accountability. She understands that this bill may be “the bare minimum”, but it is a crucial step towards creating a safer and more equitable society for all.

In conclusion, the ICE Use of Force Accountability Act is a necessary and positive step towards addressing the widespread issue of police brutality and abuse of power within ICE. It is a reminder that change is possible and that we must continue to hold our leaders accountable for their actions. Let us support this bill and continue to push for meaningful reform within our criminal justice system.
