After CBP Killed Alex Pretti, His Federal VA Boss Blamed Minnesota Leaders
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a shocking turn of events, the recent killing of a VA nurse, Alex Pretti, has sparked a blame game between the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and local officials. As the nation mourns the loss of one of its dedicated healthcare professionals, it is disheartening to see those in positions of power shifting blame instead of taking responsibility.

The incident in question took place in Minnesota, where Pretti, a 64-year-old nurse who had served at the VA Medical Center for over 10 years, was shot and killed by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear, but what is clear is the inadequate response from the VA Secretary, Denis McDonough.

When asked for a response to the killing, McDonough diverted attention to local authorities, stating that the incident happened outside the VA’s jurisdiction and therefore, the responsibility lies with the Minnesota leaders. This callous response not only undermines the gravity of the situation but also reflects a lack of accountability from the VA.

As an organization that is responsible for providing healthcare services to our nation’s veterans, the VA should prioritize protecting and supporting its employees. Such a tragic incident should have been met with a more empathetic and proactive response from the Secretary.

Instead, McDonough’s statement only adds insult to injury, especially for Pretti’s family and loved ones who are still grieving their loss. It sends the message that the VA does not take the safety and well-being of its employees seriously and is more concerned with passing the blame onto others.

This is not the first time the VA has come under scrutiny for its handling of employee safety. A 2020 report from the Government Accountability Office found that the VA did not consistently follow its own policies to ensure employee safety, putting them at risk for workplace violence. This is a clear indication that the VA needs to do more to protect its employees and create a safe work environment.

Moreover, the Secretary’s response also highlights a concerning trend of government agencies deflecting responsibility and not taking ownership of their actions. We need leaders who are willing to take responsibility and work towards finding solutions instead of pointing fingers.

It is also worth mentioning that the VA employee’s union, the American Federation of Government Employees, has condemned McDonough’s response and called for a thorough investigation into the incident. They have reiterated the need for the VA to prioritize employee safety and hold those responsible for the shooting accountable.

It is time for the VA to take a hard look at its policies and procedures and make necessary changes to ensure the safety and well-being of its employees. No one should have to fear for their lives while performing their duties, especially those working in the healthcare sector, who selflessly serve our nation’s veterans every day.

In conclusion, the killing of VA nurse Alex Pretti is a tragedy that has shaken the entire nation. It is unacceptable for the VA Secretary to shift the blame onto others instead of taking responsibility for the safety of its employees. The VA must take necessary actions to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future and prioritize the well-being of its workforce. Let us honor Pretti’s memory by standing up for the safety of all VA employees and holding those in power accountable for their actions.
