Joe Biden’s Cruel Border Shutdown Follows in Clinton and Obama’s Footsteps Too
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The issue of immigration has become a controversial topic in recent years, with a sharp divide between those who advocate for stricter policies and those who believe in more open borders. With the current United States administration under the leadership of President Joe Biden, the debate has once again been brought to the forefront, with the implementation of strict measures and policies aimed at controlling the influx of asylum-seekers.

The Biden administration’s approach to immigration has been widely criticized by many, with some even claiming that it is a continuation of former President Donald Trump’s draconian policies. While it is true that Trump’s stringent stance on immigration has had a significant impact on the current situation, it is crucial to recognize that the path leading to it was paved by the Democratic Party.

In recent years, the U.S. has seen a surge in the number of individuals seeking asylum, fleeing from violence, persecution, or poverty in their home countries. This increase in migrant flow has led to a strain on resources and placed pressure on the immigration system. As a result, the government has implemented numerous policies aimed at controlling the number of asylum-seekers entering the country, with the justification that it is for the safety and security of American citizens.

However, the implementation of these measures has come with severe consequences for those seeking refuge in the U.S. The Biden administration’s use of Title 42, a public health provision implemented by the Trump administration, has resulted in the immediate expulsion of thousands of migrants at the border. This has been criticized by human rights organizations, who argue that it is a violation of international law and puts vulnerable individuals at risk.

While many have pointed fingers at the Trump administration for these policies, it is essential to acknowledge that the groundwork for these measures was laid by Democratic administrations. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama both implemented policies that set the stage for the strict immigration stance we see today.

During the Clinton administration, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) was passed in 1996, which expanded the list of crimes that could lead to deportation and significantly increased border enforcement. This legislation, along with the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA), also signed by Clinton, had a profound impact on immigration policies, making it easier for the government to deport individuals and leading to an increase in mandatory detention for certain offenses.

The Obama administration, on the other hand, saw the implementation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provided protection to undocumented individuals who arrived in the U.S. as children. While this was perceived as a step towards more comprehensive immigration reform, it also came with increased deportation of individuals with criminal records, with the number of deportations under the Obama administration exceeding that of any other president.

The strict immigration policies put in place by Clinton and Obama had a significant impact on the current state of affairs. While some may argue that their intentions were different from those of the Trump administration, the consequences are undeniably similar. The Biden administration’s use of Title 42 and other restrictive measures follows in the footsteps of Clinton and Obama, with the justification that it is necessary to control the flow of migrants and protect American citizens.

Furthermore, the issue of immigration has become highly politicized, with the Trump administration using it as a means to rally support from its base. This has resulted in an atmosphere of fear and xenophobia, further perpetuating the idea that strict immigration policies are necessary for the safety and security of the nation.

It is crucial to recognize the root causes of the current immigration crisis and address them with compassion and empathy. The U.S. has a long history of welcoming immigrants and providing refuge to those in need. It is time for the government to move away from punitive measures and focus on implementing a comprehensive and humane immigration system that upholds the values of justice and fairness.

In conclusion, while the current immigration crackdown can be attributed to the policies of the Trump administration, it is essential to acknowledge that the path leading to it was paved by Democratic administrations. The Biden administration, along with future administrations, must take responsibility for their role in creating the current situation and work towards implementing more compassionate and fair policies. It is time for the U.S. to reclaim its position as a leader in welcoming and providing refuge to those in need.
