Gaza marks Eid al-Adha under open skies amid Israeli crushing grip

Across the war-torn Gaza Strip, Palestinians gathered early Friday to mark the start of Eid al-Adha, one of Islam’s most sacred holidays. Despite the destruction and devastation that has plagued this region for years, the spirit of Eid shone through as people came together to pray and celebrate amidst the ruins of their shattered mosques.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. It is a time for reflection, gratitude, and charity, as well as a celebration of faith and community. For Palestinians in Gaza, this Eid holds even greater significance as they continue to struggle for their freedom and basic human rights.

As the sun rose over the Gaza Strip, the streets were filled with the sounds of prayers and the joyful greetings of “Eid Mubarak” (Happy Eid). Despite the difficult circumstances, the spirit of unity and resilience was evident as families and friends gathered to pray and exchange gifts.

One of the most striking scenes was at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam, which has been a focal point of the recent conflict between Israel and Palestine. Despite the damage caused by airstrikes, worshippers still flocked to the mosque to offer their prayers and pay their respects. The sight of people praying amidst the rubble was a powerful reminder of the strength and determination of the Palestinian people.

In other parts of Gaza, Eid prayers were held in makeshift mosques, as many mosques have been destroyed or damaged in the ongoing conflict. These makeshift mosques were set up in homes, schools, and even on the streets, demonstrating the unwavering faith and resilience of the Palestinian community.

After the prayers, families gathered to share a traditional Eid breakfast, which includes dishes such as maqluba (a rice and meat dish), falafel, and sweet pastries. Despite the economic hardships faced by many in Gaza, families still managed to prepare a feast to celebrate this special occasion.

Eid al-Adha is also a time for giving back to the community, and many Palestinians in Gaza took the opportunity to distribute food and gifts to those in need. Despite their own struggles, they showed incredible generosity and compassion towards their fellow citizens, highlighting the true spirit of Eid.

However, the celebrations were not without a sense of sadness and grief. As families came together to pray and celebrate, they also remembered the loved ones they have lost in the ongoing conflict. The recent violence has claimed the lives of many innocent Palestinians, including children, leaving a deep scar on the community.

But even in the face of such tragedy, the Palestinian people remain resilient and hopeful. As they gathered to celebrate Eid, they also sent a message of peace and unity to the world. They refuse to be defined by the destruction and violence that surrounds them and instead choose to focus on their faith and the strength of their community.

As the day came to an end, the streets of Gaza were filled with the sounds of children playing and families enjoying the festive atmosphere. Despite the difficult circumstances, the spirit of Eid prevailed, bringing a sense of hope and joy to the war-torn region.

In the midst of all the chaos and destruction, the celebration of Eid al-Adha in Gaza is a reminder of the power of faith and community. It is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Palestinian people, who continue to hold onto their traditions and culture despite the challenges they face.

As we reflect on the celebrations in Gaza, let us also remember the importance of standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people and working towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. May this Eid bring peace, love, and unity to all those who are suffering around the world. Eid Mubarak to all!
