Israeli settlements in occupied West Bank surge 40% under Netanyahu

Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank have been a contentious issue for decades, with the international community condemning them as illegal under international law. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, these settlements have not only continued to exist, but have sharply increased in number. This has not only led to further displacement and suffering for the Palestinian people, but also to a rise in settler attacks against them.

According to Israeli media reports, the number of Israeli settlements in the West Bank has increased by 50% since Netanyahu took office in 2009. This has been accompanied by a significant increase in settler violence against Palestinians, with attacks on Palestinian homes, crops, and even mosques becoming a regular occurrence.

The expansion of settlements and the rise in settler violence have been fueled by the policies of the Netanyahu government, which has actively encouraged and supported the growth of these illegal settlements. This has been done through various means, including providing financial incentives and subsidies to Israeli settlers, as well as passing laws that make it easier for settlements to be built on Palestinian land.

One such law is the “Regularization Law”, which was passed in 2017 and retroactively legalized thousands of settler homes built on private Palestinian land. This law not only violates international law, but also undermines the rights and sovereignty of the Palestinian people.

The impact of these settlements on the daily lives of Palestinians cannot be overstated. They have been forced to live under constant fear and threat of violence from settlers, who often act with impunity due to the lack of accountability and protection from the Israeli government. This has resulted in a severe restriction of movement and access to basic services for Palestinians, as well as the loss of their land and livelihoods.

Moreover, the expansion of settlements has also led to the fragmentation of Palestinian territory, making the prospect of a viable and contiguous Palestinian state increasingly difficult. This has been a major obstacle to the peace process and has further deepened the divide between Israelis and Palestinians.

The international community has repeatedly condemned the expansion of settlements and settler violence, with the United Nations stating that these actions “seriously undermine the prospects for a two-state solution”. However, the Netanyahu government has continued to ignore these calls and has instead pursued a policy of annexation and colonization of Palestinian land.

It is important to note that not all Israelis support the expansion of settlements and the violence that comes with it. Many Israelis have spoken out against these actions, recognizing the harm they cause to both Palestinians and the prospects for peace. However, their voices have often been silenced or ignored by the government.

In conclusion, the increase in Israeli settlements and settler attacks under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu has had a devastating impact on the Palestinian people and the prospects for peace in the region. It is imperative that the international community takes a stronger stance against these illegal actions and holds the Israeli government accountable for its violations of international law. Only then can we hope for a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
