Eastern Libya cancels planned visit by EU ministers
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Libya’s eastern-based putschist Gen. Khalifa Haftar-led administration has once again made headlines, this time by ordering an EU commissioner and ministers from three member states to leave the country immediately. This move has sparked international concern and raised questions about the stability of the region.

The decision, which was announced on Tuesday, has been met with shock and disappointment by the European Union. The EU commissioner and ministers from France, Italy, and Germany were given a 72-hour ultimatum to leave the country, citing their alleged interference in Libya’s internal affairs.

This latest development comes as a blow to the efforts of the international community to bring peace and stability to Libya. The country has been in a state of turmoil since the overthrow of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, with rival factions vying for control of the nation.

The EU has been actively involved in trying to find a political solution to the conflict, with the aim of establishing a stable and democratic government in Libya. However, this recent move by Haftar’s administration has put a strain on the relationship between the EU and Libya.

The EU has strongly condemned the decision, calling it a violation of international law and a hindrance to the ongoing peace talks. In a statement, the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, expressed his concern and urged all parties to refrain from any actions that could escalate the situation.

The EU’s involvement in Libya has been crucial in providing humanitarian aid and support to the Libyan people. The bloc has also been instrumental in providing training and assistance to the country’s security forces in their fight against terrorism and illegal migration.

The decision to expel the EU commissioner and ministers is not only a setback for the EU’s efforts but also a blow to the Libyan people who have been suffering from the ongoing conflict. It is a step in the wrong direction and goes against the interests of the Libyan people.

The EU has been a strong supporter of the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), which is recognized as the legitimate government of Libya. The GNA has been working towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict and has been engaging in talks with Haftar’s forces.

The EU has also been a key player in the Berlin Conference, which brought together all the major stakeholders in the Libyan conflict to find a political solution. The conference resulted in a ceasefire agreement, which was welcomed by the international community.

The decision to expel the EU commissioner and ministers is not only a violation of international law but also a disregard for the efforts of the international community to bring peace to Libya. It is a clear indication that Haftar’s administration is not interested in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict.

The EU has called on Haftar’s administration to reverse its decision and allow the EU officials to continue their work in Libya. The bloc has also urged all parties to engage in dialogue and work towards a political solution that will bring an end to the suffering of the Libyan people.

In conclusion, the EU’s involvement in Libya has been crucial in providing support and assistance to the country. The decision by Haftar’s administration to expel the EU commissioner and ministers is a step in the wrong direction and goes against the interests of the Libyan people. The EU remains committed to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict and calls on all parties to work towards this goal. It is time for Haftar’s administration to put the interests of the Libyan people first and engage in meaningful dialogue to bring an end to the conflict.
