“I Said Good Morning to the Dead”: Inside the Al-Baqa Cafe Bombing
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

On the morning of August 24th, 2019, the Al-Baqa Cafe in Gaza City was bustling with customers, enjoying their morning coffee and pastries. Little did they know that in just a few moments, their lives would be forever changed by a brutal attack carried out by the Israeli military.

The Al-Baqa Cafe bombing was one of the deadliest attacks in the recent history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It claimed the lives of three Palestinians, including a pregnant woman and her 14-month-old niece, and injured dozens more. The attack also destroyed the beloved cafe, a popular gathering place for locals and a symbol of resilience in the face of ongoing violence and oppression.

As the survivors of the bombing and the loved ones of the victims try to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives, they are sharing their harrowing stories with the world. Their voices are a powerful reminder of the human toll of the ongoing conflict and the urgent need for justice and peace.

One survivor, Ahmed Al-Dabba, described the scene inside the cafe moments before the attack. “It was a typical morning in the cafe, people were chatting and laughing. I remember saying good morning to the regulars, including the pregnant woman and her niece,” he recalled. “But suddenly, there was a loud explosion and chaos erupted. I saw bodies and blood everywhere. It was a nightmare.”

Ahmed was lucky to escape with only minor injuries, but many others were not as fortunate. Among the victims was 23-year-old Rania Abu El-Abed, who was seven months pregnant. Her husband, Bilal, was also injured in the attack. He tearfully recounted the last moments he spent with his wife and unborn child. “We were having breakfast together when the bombing happened. I held her hand and told her everything would be okay, but then she lost consciousness and never woke up,” he said.

The loss of Rania and her unborn child has left a gaping hole in the hearts of her loved ones. Her brother, Mohammed, spoke of the pain and grief that has consumed their family. “She was the light of our lives, always smiling and full of life. Now, there is only darkness and emptiness without her,” he said.

The stories of the survivors and victims of the Al-Baqa Cafe bombing are just a glimpse into the daily reality for Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. The ongoing violence and oppression have taken a toll on the mental and emotional wellbeing of the people, especially the youth who have grown up in a constant state of fear and trauma.

Nour, a 16-year-old girl who lost her best friend in the attack, shared her struggle with survivor’s guilt. “We were supposed to meet at the cafe that day, but I overslept and didn’t make it. I can’t stop thinking about what could have happened if I had been there. Why did I survive and she didn’t?” she said.

The trauma of the bombing has also affected the children who witnessed the attack. 8-year-old Youssef, who was playing outside the cafe at the time, still has nightmares about the explosion. “I saw people running and screaming, and I was so scared. I couldn’t find my mom and dad for hours, and I thought they were dead,” he said, tears welling up in his eyes.

But amidst the pain and suffering, there is also a sense of resilience and determination among the survivors and their families. They refuse to be broken by the violence and are determined to seek justice for the lives lost and the destruction caused by the attack.

“We will not be silenced. We will continue to demand accountability for this senseless act of violence. We will not rest until justice is served for our loved ones and all Palestinians who have been victims of Israeli aggression,” said Bilal, his voice filled with determination.

The Al-Baqa Cafe bombing has once again brought to light the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the need for the international community to take action. The siege on Gaza, which has been in place for over a decade, has severely restricted the movement of people and goods, causing immense suffering for the Palestinian population.

The attack on the Al-Baqa Cafe is just one of many tragic incidents that have occurred as a result of the occupation and blockade. It is a stark reminder of the urgent need for a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
