Teachers Scrambled After ICE Released Tear Gas Outside a Chicago Elementary School
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The recent actions taken by the Trump administration have left many Americans feeling outraged and concerned. While the country grapples with issues such as the ongoing pandemic and systemic racism, the government has chosen to prioritize the militarization of American cities. This has not only resulted in increased tensions and violence, but it has also had a direct impact on our most vulnerable population: our students.

In Chicago, teachers are facing the difficult task of trying to educate students who have been traumatized by the current state of our nation. These students are not only dealing with the stress and uncertainty of the pandemic, but they are also witnessing the effects of militarization in their own communities. And to make matters worse, their schools are severely underfunded, making it even more challenging for teachers to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment.

The recent incident at an elementary school in Chicago serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of this misguided prioritization. As Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents released tear gas outside the school, teachers were left scrambling to ensure the safety of their students. This is a terrifying experience for any child, but for students who are already dealing with trauma, it can be even more devastating.

The fact that this took place outside a school, a place that should be a sanctuary for learning and growth, is a clear indication of the lack of regard for the well-being of our students. Instead of investing in their education and providing the necessary resources, the government is choosing to spend millions of dollars on militarizing our cities. This not only perpetuates a culture of fear and violence, but it also sends a damaging message to our youth that their education is not a priority.

It is unacceptable that our students, especially those in underfunded schools, are being subjected to such traumatic experiences. As teachers, it is our duty to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our students to learn and grow. But how can we do that when the government is actively working against us?

The impact of these actions goes far beyond the immediate physical danger. Trauma can have long-lasting effects on a child’s mental and emotional well-being. It can hinder their ability to learn and thrive, and it can lead to a lifetime of struggles. As educators, we see the effects of trauma on our students every day, and it breaks our hearts to witness their pain and suffering.

It is time for the government to reassess their priorities and invest in our students’ future. This means providing adequate funding for schools and resources for students who have been traumatized. It means addressing the root causes of violence and working towards peaceful solutions. It means acknowledging the importance of education and investing in our youth’s potential.

As teachers, we will continue to do our best to support our students and provide a safe and nurturing environment for them to learn. But we cannot do it alone. We need the support of our government to prioritize the well-being and education of our youth. It is time for them to listen to the voices of our students and take action to create a better, safer future for all.

In the midst of these challenging times, it is crucial to remember that our students are our future. They are the ones who will shape our world and lead us towards a brighter tomorrow. It is our responsibility to ensure that they are given the necessary tools and support to do so. Let us come together and demand that our students’ education and well-being be made a priority. Our future depends on it.
